I was 10 years old when Halle Berry took on the role of Storm. With white hair and an indistinguishable accent, she was the most important Black woman in comics; and my tiny ass couldn’t be any more excited. But it would be my father’s gripes while watching the movie would sit with me.
He was stuck on 3 things:
1. Patrick Stewart was THEE perfect casting.
2. A fresh-faced Hugh Jackman’s nose flaring was wildly annoying.
3. Storm was all wrong.
She was too light, she was too short, and she was too bland. At this point in my life, my only connection to the Storm was in the 90s cartoon, and I had to agree with my usually moronic father’s opinion. I asked him, “Well, what is she supposed to be?” My dad walked away, coming back with a couple of his vintage comic books.
“Complicated.” He responded as he laid the literature in front of me.
